This is definitely how surf films should be seen. On the grass of main beach, with full moon above, the sound of the ocean and the rhythm of the waves lapping on Australia’s most easterly point. Grab your picnic rug and share a night of salty films and genuinely good vibes with your friends and family. If the weather gods don’t behave, our friends at the Beach Hotel have offered us an alternative option.

Minds In The Water

minds in the water

USA | 1:30:00 | Dir: Justin Krumb | Prod: Dave Rastovich & Jonny Vasic

Five years in the making, Minds In The Water is the story of one surfer’s journey from Australia to the Galapagos, Tonga, Alaska and Japan to help protect dolphins, whales and their ocean environment. The film captures a key moment in the life of pro surfer Dave “Rasta” Rastovich, a Byron Local, as he evolves from ocean surfer and admirer to ocean activist. Along the way, he enlists a team of filmmakers, journalists, musicians, eco-pirates, celebrity surfers, and even a professional mermaid, to help promote responsible stewardship of the oceans. Rasta’s film is something for Byron locals to be proud of. It may be an international production, but it has its roots in Byron.

More and more surfers are becoming leaders in ocean conservation. Take Surfers for Cetaceans, for example. These folks don’t just ride waves, they pay attention to the ocean environment and have an intimate understanding of when things are ‘out of sync’. What is clearly illuminated is that we can no longer take the health of our oceans, and its creatures, for granted. We can’t turn our backs on the ocean… just like you should never turn your back on a wave, unless you intend to ride it…

All children under 15 must be accompanied by the parent or an adult guardian. While engaging and inspiring, this film contains short scenes of violence against wildlife which may be unsuitable for your child.

Also screening with Minds in the Water will be a selection of surf shorts and music videos including:

Yeah Donny, Kobe & The Sea, Farewell by M. Jack Bee and more!
