BBFF08’s Opening Night celebrates Australian filmmaking talent as we bring you world premieres from two filmmakers taking the next step in their evolving careers. Cast and crew from both films will be attending the evening and presenting their films. The films will be preceded by amazing aerial displays performed by Circus Arts and a catered party follows the screenings. 


You Better Watch Out

World Premiere

A wickedly dark comedy about a department store Santa Claus who is kidnapped by two disgruntled brothers with a score to settle. As the brothers continue their interrogation, the man in the Santa suit is forced to remember things from his own past, things long since buried, of a time when he stopped believing in himself. Its only when he faces his own demons that he reaches enlightenment. However, enlightenment comes at a price.

You Better Watch Out is South Australian Director, Steve Callen’s first short film and stars AFI’s 2007 best actor winner Stephen Curry (The King, The Castle, Changi), Dan Wyllie (Chopper, Romper Stomper, Love My Way) and Chris Haywood (Shine, Jindabyne, Breaker Morant).

A journey of friendships pushed to the edge. Five friends (Ben Geurens, Ryan Johnson, Socratis Otto, Billie Rose Prichard and Ella Scott Lynch) descend into the valleys of the Blue Mountains, in search of the Wollemi Pine, the world’s rarest tree. The wilderness closes in around them and they discover the harsh realities of friendship, intimacy and the consequences of relinquishing their past.

Shooting with only natural light in the winter valleys of the Blue Mountains the cast and crew were subjected to extreme conditions – the result is an unforgettable drama.

Monkey Puzzle is Mark Forstmann’s first feature film having directed several short films and two documentraries. These films have screened locally and internationally at film festivals and have been broadcast in Australia and overseas.
Mark teamed up with producer Tamara Popper, who has produced short films including A Natural Talent, nominated for 2 AFI awards 2006 and winner of the Jameson Award for Best Australian Short Film Flickerfest 2006 and Unit #52 selected Directors Fortnight Cannes International Film Festival 2003.  Documentaries include Sydney At War – The Untold Story voted in the top ten documentaries at Sydney Film Festival 2004.
