Flutterby
Australia / 3 min / Dir: Jack Parry / Animation / 2007 / Byron Premiere
An uplifting voyage led by a fragile butterfly - the magic catalyst of joy - through the harsh milieu of isolated Australia.
Flutterby is Australia's answer to the Silly Symphonies. The many faces of suffering are everywhere; yet, amid its bitterness pockets of joy can be found if we stop ignoring them. The film is skilfully interpreted and synchronized to very energising and animated gypsy melodies. Flutterby begins with the energetic birth of the Ulysses butterfly in a grove of gum trees already occupied by a rather hungry yet artistic spider, rapidly expanding his web, with his sights firmly on this most majestic prize. As their carefully choreographed relationship spirals towards an elegant crescendo a bumbling intruder shatters the master plan and everything comes undone.
