Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto, who shared the Best Actress Award at Cannes for their performances in the film, lead Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s deeply human new drama about an unexpected friendship that transforms two lives.

Marie-Lou (Efira) runs an aged-care home outside Paris, where she is trying to introduce Humanitude - an approach to care built around listening, compassion and respect for the dignity of residents. Her efforts meet resistance from overstretched staff and the commercial realities of the institution. Then she meets Mari (Okamoto), a Japanese theatre director living with terminal cancer, and an unexpected connection between the two women develops into a profound and sustaining friendship.

As their lives become increasingly intertwined, their bond opens into something much larger: an exploration of how we care for one another, what gives life meaning, and whether determination and human connection can shift circumstances that seem impossible to change.

From Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, the acclaimed director of Drive My Car, All of a Sudden is an expansive, emotionally rich story of friendship, dignity and two remarkable women refusing to accept that the world simply has to be the way it is.
