A woman gently touching a brown horse's face during sunset in an open field, with blue sky and clouds in the background.

In the vast, sun-soaked landscapes of Western Australia’s Kimberley, an extraordinary relationship is quietly changing young lives.

Guided by Horses follows Aboriginal Professor Juli Coffin and the young people of Yawardani Jan-ga, a groundbreaking Aboriginal-led equine assisted learning program where horses, Country and culture come together in unexpected ways. For young people navigating the pressures of growing up, questions of identity and the effects of cultural disconnection, the horses offer something remarkably simple: a chance to be present, to be seen and, gradually, to see themselves differently.

Professor Coffin knows the power of that connection personally. Horses played a profound role in her own life, and her belief in their ability to reach young people has grown into a program that has now supported more than 2,000 participants across the Kimberley. At Yawardani Jan-ga, there are no classrooms and no expectations to perform. Instead, young people learn through relationships with animals that respond not to status or words, but to body language, confidence, trust and emotion.

Against a backdrop of red earth, turquoise water, open skies and the rhythms of life around Broome, director Sean O’Reilly captures these encounters with warmth, humour and striking cinematic beauty. Alongside the intimate human stories, the film observes wild brumbies and explores the remarkable intelligence and social sensitivity of horses - animals whose instinctive awareness of one another can become a powerful mirror for the people around them.

While the film emerges from a region where Aboriginal young people face profound challenges, Guided by Horses refuses to define its subjects through trauma. Instead, it finds its strength in joy, resilience, humour and the possibilities that open when young people reconnect with themselves, with culture, with Country and with something beyond the noise of everyday life.

Beautifully photographed, deeply human and ultimately uplifting, Guided by Horses is a story about trust, belonging and the quiet moments that can change the direction of a life - and a reminder that sometimes the way forward begins with learning how to listen.
