Pedro Almodóvar returns with a playful, emotionally charged drama starring Bárbara Lennie, fresh from Competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.

Elsa is a successful advertising director who responds to her mother’s sudden death by doing what she knows best: throwing herself into work. But when a panic attack finally forces her to stop, she escapes Madrid for the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote with her friend Patricia, hoping distance might provide the breathing room she needs.

Running alongside Elsa’s story is that of Raúl, a filmmaker struggling through a creative drought and writing a screenplay that begins to look suspiciously like the lives we are watching unfold. As the boundaries between memory, invention and lived experience start to blur, Almodóvar turns grief, friendship, love and artistic inspiration into a characteristically rich exploration of the stories we tell - and the people we borrow from - to make sense of our lives.

With a superb ensemble including Leonardo Sbaraglia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Victoria Luengo, Milena Smit and Rossy de Palma, Bitter Christmas (Amarga Navidad) finds Almodóvar once again playing with cinema, identity and the slippery territory between fiction and reality.
