The Australian Premieres of 3 South American surf films travelling through coastlines, communities and very different ways of living with the ocean. From Brazil and Chile, these films follow people whose lives are shaped by surfing, ancestry, community, craft, spirituality and belonging.

Moving beyond the break, Onda Latina explores the cultures that grow around the water: Indigenous connections to coast and country, local surf communities, environmental pressures, personal ambition and the deep pull of place. Different coasts, different stories, but the same current running through them all.

Portuguese and Spanish with English Subtitles

Lúcio Firmino, known as Feroz, is a familiar voice on the coast of Espírito Santo. A descendant of the Tupiniquim, he has built a life firmly on his own terms. Through scarcity, grief, single fatherhood and the pressures of a conservative environment, Lúcio remains fiercely himself, forging deep connections with the people and coastline around him. Among the waves of his local beaches, the ocean becomes a place of healing, resistance and survival - and a constant at the heart of his life.

In Chile, huiro is a seaweed; it is where life in the ocean begins, it is the root. From there, this adventure is born - from the need to return to where everything starts. A camper built from scratch, a surfer and his dog.

A journey along the Chilean coast in search of connection.
