A spiritual road movie driven by music, friendship and a deep connection to country.
What happens when two of Australia’s most recognisable actors, David Field and Geoff Morrel, join forces with a musical wizard, Tim Oxley, and take their songs on the road?
The result is The Number 4 Band, an unlikely troubadour trio of conscientious vagabonds, travelling through some of the most remote and marginalised communities in Australia with their own raw blend of country, gospel and blues.
Their music is rough-edged, heartfelt and defiantly their own. They are not chasing fame so much as something purer: the perfect sound, the right audience, and the kind of connection that can only happen when a song lands exactly where it is meant to. Along the way, the journey becomes as much about the people and places they encounter as it is about the music itself.
Yet behind the dusty roads, intimate performances and “bad ass gospel” spirit sits one enduring dream: to take their music all the way to Nashville and play the legendary Grand Ole Opry.
Funny, soulful and full of heart, this is a film about friendship, music, country and the strange places a shared obsession can take you.
Directed by Stephen Dupont, whose film KAUGERE: A Place Where Nobody Enters won the BBFF2023 Best Documentary Award.
